Toys from Abashevo village in Penza oblast have been mentioned since the beginning of the 17th century. In most cases, the toys represent animals — goats, reindeer, rams — often in rather fanciful forms. They are painted with bright enamels — blue, green, red, often in very unexpected combinations. Some details — horns, for example — are painted with a gilding technique known as “potal” so they look like gold. One of the distinctive characters is a deer with its antlers arranged in a ladder-like formation.
