The craft originated in the 18th century in Dymkovo Sloboda near Vyatka, or Kirov as it is known today, in the southeastern part of European Russia. This is a rare case of a toy craft developing separately from a ceramics craft. From the 1930s, it became a model for Soviet folk arts and crafts which others had to emulate. Characteristic of the craft is bright-multicolored painting over a white background and a commitment to working with egg tempera.
