Kozhlya is a village in Kursk oblast. Before the October Revolution the toy-making craft here was one of the most famous in Russia. The toys are mostly in the form of whistles, which were made for the spring festival of Saint George. They are fashioned from a mixture of two types of clay , the so-called ‘dronyayevskaya’ blue clay, which turns white after firing, and the local gray clay. The uncolored background is ornamented with violet, red, yellow and green.
