These toys are from the Romanovskaya Sloboda in Lipetsk oblast and have been known since the 17th century. Originally, the toy whistles were made for the Yuri’s Day spring fair, a tradition interrupted in the 1940s but revived in the 1990s. In addition to women, horsemen and peacocks there is another distinctive subject known as ‘the one-horse sled’. Typically, the number of holes that can be played on these whistles is increased to four. The toys are painted to look like silver.
